Introduction

The universal peaceful acceptance (UPA) of the Church to a designated Roman Pontiff is an infallible sign that he is the true Pope legitimately elected and endowed with ordinary universal jurisdiction. This doctrine is theologically certain and common to all approved theologians and canonists before 1963.

  1. Primary and Original Link with the Sovereign Pontiff

1.1 Thomistic Foundation

Saint Thomas Aquinas (Summa Theologiæ, IIa-IIæ, q. 39, a. 1, corpus) teaches that the unity of the Church requires that all unite in one single faith and under one single spiritual head, namely Christ, whose place one alone holds in the Church, namely the Sovereign Pontiff.

1.2 Explicit Doctrine of the Authors

Cardinal Louis Billot, S.J., De Ecclesia Christi, 5th edition, tome I, thesis XXIX, § 5, n. 632 (Rome-Paris, 1927, p. 632):

« Universalis Ecclesiæ adhaesio est infallibilis regula veritatis in electione Pontificis, ita ut quicumque ab universa Ecclesia pacifice acceptus est ut Summus Pontifex, ipse vere sit Summus Pontifex. »

“The universal adherence of the Church is the infallible rule of truth in the election of the Pontiff, so that whoever is peacefully accepted by the universal Church as Sovereign Pontiff is truly the Sovereign Pontiff.”

John of St. Thomas, O.P., Cursus Theologicus, In IIam-IIae, q. 1-7, disp. II, a. 2, n. 38 (Solesmes ed., t. VI, p. 456):

« Pacifica possessio Papatus cum universali Ecclesiæ obedientia est argumentum certissimum legitimitatis. »

“The peaceful possession of the Papacy with the universal obedience of the Church is the most certain argument of legitimacy.”

1.3 Radical Healing of Any Prior Occult Vice by the UPA

The UPA radically heals (in radice) any prior occult vice to the election, even of divine right (for example, a purely internal or occult heresy before the election), because an occult vice is never diriment in the external forum of the Church.

Unanimous Authors:

Thomas Cajetan, O.P., De comparatione auctoritatis Papæ et Concilii, cap. XXVI, n. 318 (Angelicum ed. 1936, p. 319):

« Universalis Ecclesiæ acceptatio sanat in radice omnem defectum in electione papæ, etiam si occultus esset. »

“The universal acceptance of the Church radically heals every defect in the election of the pope, even if it were occult.”

Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J., De Romano Pontifice, lib. IV, cap. 2 (ed. 1610, col. 1015-1016):

« Pacifica totius Ecclesiæ adhaesio et obedientia sanat omnem defectum in electione, etiamsi antea dubium esset an electus esset verus papa vel propter aliquod occultum impedimentum. »

“The peaceful adherence and obedience of the entire Church heals every defect in the election, even if there was previously doubt that the elected was the true pope because of some occult impediment.”

Charles-René Billuart, O.P., Cursus theologiæ, tract. De fide, diss. V, a. 8, § 2:

« Pacifica possessio et universalis obedientia Ecclesiæ sanat radicaliter omnem defectum occultum in electione papæ. »

“The peaceful possession and universal obedience of the Church radically heals every occult defect in the election of the pope.”

Franz Xaver Wernz, S.J. – Petrus Vidal, S.J., Ius Canonicum, tom. II, n. 453, note 113 (Rome, 1928):

« Pax et obedientia Ecclesiæ universalis radicitus sanat omnem defectum in electione Summi Pontificis, exceptis solis iis quæ iure divino positive manifestoque impediunt receptionem potestatis.»

“The peace and obedience of the universal Church radically heals every defect in the election of the Sovereign Pontiff, except only those which, by divine right, positively and manifestly prevent the reception of the power.”

A purely occult prior heresy, discovered only after death, is thus juridically healed by the UPA; it can never render the election null ab initio.

  1. Analogical Extension to Other Ecclesiastical Realities

This extension remains valid (diocesan bishops, councils, universal laws, canonizations, dogmatic facts), but always subordinated to the pontifical UPA and to the external forum.

  1. Essential Limits and Distinctions

The UPA heals every occult vice, even the most grave; it does not supply for a manifest and public diriment vice of divine right (public heresy before the election), because Providence prevents the universal Church from peacefully adhering to such a subject.

In the prolonged vacancy of the Apostolic See since the public and pertinacious heresy of Paul VI in 1964, the total absence of UPA for the current conciliar claimants confirms that the See is vacant.

Conclusion

The universal peaceful acceptance is the absolutely certain external sign given by divine Providence to recognize the legitimate visible head of the Church. It radically heals every occult vice, excludes every manifest defect, and constitutes the supreme rule of juridical certainty in the concrete order of the Church.

In the absence of UPA for sixty-one years, the Apostolic See is vacant; the Catholic Church subsists in those who integrally keep the traditional faith, awaiting the legitimate Pontiff that Our Lord will give us and who will be universally and peacefully accepted.

May the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Destroyer of all heresies, keep you in the integral Catholic truth.

3 Replies to “The Universal Peaceful Acceptance (U.P.A.)”

  1. I am a Catholic chirtian from Shanghai, China. I recently read an article about Sedeprivationism, and I agree with this view. It correctly describes the church today. Unfortunately, there are no relevant churches in Asia that support this view. How should I continue my religious life? Should I leave the novos ordo church and Re-baptism?

    • Dear faithful,

Your agreement with the sedeprivationist position is a praiseworthy recognition of the grave crisis affecting the Church since Vatican II.

To continue your religious life faithfully to authentic Catholic doctrine (as taught before 1963), here are the following counsels, based on certain Catholic theology:

      1. You must absolutely avoid active participation in the Novus Ordo Mass and sacraments administered within the conciliar structures, as they are invalid, given by invalid priests, tainted with errors and can endanger the faith. The See of Peter has been vacant since the public promulgation of heresies contained notably in *Lumen Gentium* by Paul VI in 1964. Successive occupants lack the authority to impose a new rite of Mass or teachings contrary to tradition.

      2. Prioritarily seek a traditional Mass (rite of Saint Pius V) celebrated by a faithful Catholic priest, uncompromised with modern errors. Unfortunately, in Asia and particularly in China as of 2026, no public chapels are known to adhere to this position.I know there are some catholics living there. But “Official” Catholic churches in China (such as St. Ignatius Cathedral in Shanghai) follow the Novus Ordo rite and recognize the conciliar claimants. Rare early morning Masses in Latin that may still exist in some parishes are typically Novus Ordo in Latin, not the traditional rite.

      3. In the absence of an accessible traditional Mass, Catholic theology approves staying at home on Sundays to pray the rosary, read the Mass from a traditional missal (dry Mass), meditate on Scripture, and perform acts of charity. This suffices to sanctify Sunday without sin, for God does not command the impossible.

      4. Regarding possible re-baptism: Baptism received in the Church (even under a doubtful regime) can be valid if conferred with the proper matter, form, and intention, which is presumed in ordinary cases. An absolute re-baptism would be sacrilege; at most, a conditional baptism could be considered by a competent Catholic priest if serious and founded doubt existed about the first, but this is rare and must be examined case by case.

To persevere, pray the Virgin Mary daily, read works of the saints and popes prior to 1958, and seek possible contacts with faithful priests from afar (by correspondence or travel if feasible). Providence will provide in due time.

May Our Lord and His holy Mother keep you in the true faith.
