- Origin
This text is an important part of the Tradition of the great exorcists (Mgr. Tournyol du Clos, the EEHH Fusco, Amorth and Tomascelli), to protect us against the evil of the devils and to free us from it, if we can suppose that the devil is involved in a certain place and/or in a certain period of our life.
- By Whom
This text (in particular the exorcism of Leo XIII, see further) must be recited solemnly in the name of the Church by an appointed priest or bishop. It may also be recited by a pious layman, but then not solemnly and not in the name of the Church – for this is reserved to the priests – but rather in private circumstances.
It is a prayer in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, for only God is stronger than the devil.
And it may only be recited if this priest or layman – and also the persons concerned over whom it is possibly pronounced – are in the state of grace and desire to make progress in the spiritual life, the way of holiness or of perfection. Otherwise “the devils return and the end will be worse than the beginning” (Matt. 12:45). For deliverance is always accompanied by a greater good that God has in view by permitting the evil: and it is among other things the spiritual progress of the persons concerned.
We wrote: only God is stronger than the devil, so we must unite ourselves as much as possible with God, Jesus, by acts of faith, hope and especially of love, through the mediation of Mary, the Holy Archangel Michael, the Saints and Heavenly Angels. For love is the only thing that truly unites us with God (I Cor 13). The exorcism is a sacramental: therefore it works “ex opere operantis”: exclusively as much as there is love in the one who gives it and in the one who receives and uses it.
Here an important principle: God sometimes permits an evil (for example the fall of Adam) in the sense that He does not prevent it, but He permits the evil only with a view to a greater good that can be realized on the occasion of that evil. It is therefore very important to know and do the will of God. In the case of an emerging evil that is: first pray “out of love for God and the soul(s)” to remove the evil. But if it does not go away or not immediately, or if it only partially goes away, then we must continue to do our best and in prayer humbly ask God what greater good He has in view by not preventing this evil. And then we must subsequently ask for the beautiful grace to realize that greater good fully and permanently in our life. Usually that greater good is at least an improvement of the spiritual life, for example detachment from an addiction or a sinful life, more trust in God, more detachment from the worldly, more prayer life, less reliance on ourselves but on grace, more humility, knowledge of the discernment of spirits (good and evil), more patience, a greater holiness, etc.

“Good God, in Jesus’ Name and through the intercession of the Holy Virgin Mary, help us to understand and apply Your holy Will better, give us the grace to know better and to realize the greater good that You have in view by permitting all this evil.”
o Good God, help me in Jesus’ Name and through the intercession of the Holy Virgin Mary to grow on the way to holiness as You have provided for me from all eternity.
o Good God, in Jesus’ Name and through the intercession of the Holy Virgin Mary, if there are satanists involved who want to harm me, I pray You for their conversion, for You Yourself ask us to love our enemies and to pray for them, Amen.”
- Neutralize, Remove or Avoid the Causes of Evil Influences with Ordinary Means. All Kinds of Advice
o Idol images and bad books etc.: away with them. Remove everything in the house that has anything to do with false religions. Destroy it completely. The devil is intensely bound to it. It gives the devil “a foot in your house”. It offends God to a high degree. It goes against the first and most important commandment and other commandments.
o New products and techniques: Be careful with new products and techniques supposedly for health and well-being: if they are of “new age”, of oriental, African, Asian or pagan origin, they are often or mostly diabolical, or if they are directly under diabolical influence that is often hidden. They can cause much damage without one noticing it. For example, amulets with invitations to a kind of spiritism are often put in letterboxes. Concrete example: “pierre d’eau vive” has three times a nicely camouflaged 666 and a barely recognizable inverted triangle; it gives a beneficial effect on drinking water in the short term, but a very nefarious diabolical effect in the longer term.
o For example: the “barcodes” (with a hidden 666) remove as much as reasonably possible. It is Satan who imitates the “sacramentals” of God and invents means to bring people under his nefarious influence.
o Down and feathers: strengthen the infestation, they are catalysts (amplifiers) of curses and evil bonds. So people who are in one way or another bombarded by the devils through or without a satanist must avoid sleeping under down, wearing feather clothes (coats) etc.
o Blessing lost? when satanists continue to work on someone, very strong and repeated curses can even make blessed objects and sacramentals lose their blessing. So in heavy attacks regularly re-bless the sacramentals or have them re-blessed. Keep the beneficial effect as much as possible under observation.
For example for the priest: re-bless the holy water every week (Sunday before the sung Mass), as is expressly asked in the Roman Ritual. One can safely accumulate (re-bless the same holy water each time).
o React. If you are clearly plagued by the devil, do something against it each time: make the sign of the cross with holy water or recite a prayer, but always do something against it. Never “let it go”. Never let the devil have his way. Never let yourself be done to. Otherwise it can become an infestation, or even in the long run a possession if a satanist works on you for a long time. Protect yourself and take care of yourself.
o Especially do not forget: holiness is always the ideal solution for all problems.
- Be in Order with the Sacraments
o Check the validity of baptism, confirmation, possibly marriage, priesthood. If necessary sanitize or complete, especially the exorcisms of baptism!
o Confession and Holy Communion. First requirement is therefore the state of grace: therefore regularly confess well and go devoutly to Communion. The good and complete confession is an unconditional requirement. It purifies the soul.
- Use the Sacramentals as Much as Possible and Devoutly
A Sacramental (namely a blessing or an object blessed by a priest) gives as many graces as there is dedication and zeal (namely love of God: I Cor 13) in the priest who blesses and the person who receives it or makes use of it:
o Four general graces of every sacramental: it invokes the help of heaven, it drives away the influence of hell, it gives graces for the soul and blessing for the body.
o Special graces. Every sacramental has a special grace, it is expressly indicated in the prayer of the blessing itself in the “rituale romanum”. For example the blessing of a car gives protection of the body against car accidents etc.
Therefore make a devout use of the most effective Sacramentals:
– Marian sacramentals: Our Lady herself expressly asks this in numerous places of apparition in the last centuries; St. Bernard said: “A child of Mary is not lost”:
o Scapular of Mount Carmel: the strongest sacramental! It saves from hell and purgatory!
o Blessing and imposition of the Miraculous Medal: by a priest. Wear it afterwards then also.
o The green scapular of Mary: it gives graces of conversion, especially in the hour of death.
o Carry the blessed rosary with you: this gives more protection from Our Lady, and pray it preferably daily.
o Actually everything that is honest and good can be blessed. The most known are:
– Holy water: the “ordinary” works certainly, but stronger is that of the “Three Kings” (blessing on the vigil of Epiphany), the Easter water, the water blessed in honour of St. Willibrord (receives an exorcism). There exist thirteen different blessings in the rituale. Combining blessings is possible. Sprinkle yourself and the places regularly, especially before praying, in temptations and before going to sleep.
– Blessed candles: ordinarily blessed are good, but those blessed on Candlemas are stronger: they enlighten the understanding and drive away the devils as the text of the blessing mentions. These are especially to be used in prayer and study.
– The palm branches blessed on Palm Sunday. Preferably use these to sprinkle with holy water. Lay the leaves on “problem places”. Sprinkle a possessed person with them but do not touch him/her with them. The palms then lose their power and can even transmit the negative (experience has taught that).
– Blessings of children (there are three different blessings: for infants, for older or for sick children), of healthy or sick adults, house, car, foodstuffs, medicines, library, domestic animals, farms etc.: they have a special ritual blessing; let a priest come to your home to bless everything.
– There exist scapulars of the Holy Archangel Michael and of St. Joseph. They offer special protection. There are still many other scapulars: look in the rituale.
– Epiphany chalk (blessed on 6 January) and write on the upper doorpost: “20+C+M+B+16”: that is “2016” (the current year) and “CMB” the abbreviation of the names of “Casper, Melchior and Balthasar”, and of “Christus Mansionem Benedicat” (“may Christ bless this House”). With crosses between the letters and the numbers. The most effective to protect a place is to write the chalk on all doorposts and on the four walls of the room, of which each wall points to one of the four corners of the world.
– Oil blessed by a priest according to the rituale, receives an exorcism. According to the case, to be applied on the attacked parts of the body or objects (car, etc.) or possibly on affected places. Oil works slowly but deeply, permanently and soothingly. It irritates the devils to a great degree.
– Blessed salt (as in the first part of the rite of “blessing of the holy water”. One can do on top of that the blessing of “comestiblis” or “ad omnia”): sprinkle on food or in attacked spaces (in the corners), in the bath water of a possessed or infested person, or in the cleaning water for the soiled house. It is a powerful means to nullify or diminish the working of devils and satanists. The salt loses its power approximately after one week of having been in contact with the air of a space that is heavily affected, for it “absorbs” all curses and magic in the surroundings and is then at a certain moment “saturated”. Dissolve in some holy water and throw the whole away: the best is to bury it. By burying the curse is broken. It is like a death for the object and its working. This applies to all objects and negative workings. Burning is to be avoided for Satan can consider it as a smoke offering, give him no millimetre or no chance.
– Various foodstuffs have their own blessing: the blessing thus enters the body: this grants an important relief for a possessed person.
– Blessed incense. (preferably on 6 January), otherwise “ad omnia”. Holy Scripture indeed speaks of the “devils moving themselves in the dark air”. By the incense these are considerably hindered.
o Kinds of incense:
- “Pontifical”: that is it is a “reinforcer”, to be added to the others, as base (use very little).
- “Vatican”: clears the soiled places.
- Camphor: idem.
- “Benzoin”: idem
- Attention! One can only mix the Vatican, the Camphor and the Benzoin together. It is especially good against a psychological attack (the brain or possibly obsession).
- “Tear of Somalia”: simply against the devils.
- Myrrh: gives protection.
- “Of Saint Michael”: enlightens or delivers persons and places.
– Gregorian music (not too loud). It is again the air that as by incense, by something blessed (ecclesiastical music) is purified. It especially supports the prayer and the contemplation of the soul, the unity with God.
– The Agnus Dei (piece of a special candle, blessed by a pope before 1960 at his election and every seven years) is also salutary.
– Relics are also very powerful to obtain graces, relief and protection from the Saints.
– Pieces of wood left over from the blessing of the Easter fire. Pieces of the paschal candle, as the text of the blessing mentions.
– Bell ringing. If the opportunity presents itself and if one does not live far from a church tower that rings regularly, the devout listening to the ringing of the consecrated bells is useful: it gives the grace of deliverance and invites the soul to prayer. The bell consecrated by a bishop with Holy Oil purifies the air of unclean spirits and “calls” the souls.
– And so on: all sacramentals help, look in the rituale what is all possible or ask a good priest.
- Prayers
The usual prayers must be performed and in a proper manner. Especially morning and evening prayers, the prayers before and after meals. The catechism teaches: “One must pray in temptations and dangers”. So in diabolical attacks more must be prayed: with, in, through and for Our Lord Jesus Christ, to God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost, with, in, through and for the Holy Virgin Mary, for Saint Joseph, our Patron Saints, the Guardian Angels and the Saint of the day. Marian prayers, thus the daily rosary for example are very strong. Possibly pray the litany of all the Saints. Meditating is still more powerful: it is “praying in spirit and truth” as Jesus asked of the Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob (John 4, 1-42).
- Devotions and Consecrations
do them, apply oneself to them and care for and maintain them:
o especially the consecration to the Most Holy Virgin Mary: She is the direct enemy and conqueror of the devil. The consecration to Her as love slave according to the method of St. Louis Marie Grignon de Montfort is the strongest consecration.
o Do not forget the very powerful Holy Archangel Michael (who drove the devil out of heaven), Saint Joseph, the Holy Guardian Angel etc.
- Immediately and from the Beginning: Forbid the Devils to Call for Help among Themselves or from Satanists
Forbid from the beginning and continually at regular times during a great or small exorcism, the devil(s) to inform other devils and/or satanists and/or call them to help in the Name of OLJC.
Introductory note: “+” means that we make a sign of the cross.
“Whatever devil or devils you may be, I forbid you in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by His Holy Glorious Cross + by His most precious Blood + to inform or call to help any other devil or satanist, now or in the future. Amen”.
Very important! Otherwise he calls the others to help and your deliverance action will thereby more or less, if not entirely, be weakened.
- Divide the Demons among Themselves, Break All Their Connections and Communications among Themselves and with Satanists, Bind Their Power and Break Their Influence
“In the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by His Holy Glorious Cross + by His most precious Blood + I divide all demons among themselves and destroy their connections with any satanists +, I break all communication among the devils among themselves and with the satanists +,
I bind all their power and dissolve their kingdom on earth + I break and forbid all their mutual exchanges + I dissolve all their influences +, I forbid them to call other devils or satanists to help or to inform +, I drive back those whom they call +,
I systematically break + and continually all magic +. Amen.”
- Break the Malicious Bonds
It is not sufficient “to drive out the terrorist”, one must also “dismantle the time bomb” that he has laid. We must not only drive out the devils, we must also destroy their work and that of the satanists.
Introductory note:
The “particular devil” or “assigned devil” is the devil who has been designated by hell to occupy himself with a certain person (see Epistle of Saint Peter: “The devil rages around us, seeking whom he may devour”). One must hinder his action as much as possible.
– One must work as much as possible “directed”, name the devil and/or the satanist by name, mention place, date and concrete circumstances (who, what, where, how, why, with what, with which means etc.) that works more efficiently.
– In General:
“In the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ, by His Holy Glorious Cross + by His most precious Blood + I break all diabolical bonds, works, curses, or other constructions performed by demons and/or satanists +, all diabolical imitated sacramentals + all magic or amulets + all actions by particular devils, especially those assigned to us by hell +, (possibly name the names of the involved devils if they are known for example by a previous exorcism), or those assigned to persons present here + or to persons whom I will meet today + or later and in my whole life + of subordinates or superiors + and I forbid these devils to perform anything whatever +
(one can combine this prayer with all the points 7 to 13)
– In Particular:
The more one works purposefully, the more efficacious (efficient) one is. Express the targets as sharply as possible. Thus: name concrete names of devils and/or satanists and of victims, of whom one is certain that they have to do with the matter, of times, places and concrete actions etc., otherwise one says “possibly”). Thus if possible, more in particular pray:
In the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ + by His Holy Glorious Cross + by His most precious Blood + I break all (possible) magic + (possibly) performed by …
(possibly followed by a list (a) of possible satanists, who would be “working” on us).” Judge and condemn no one, but nevertheless one may express the possibility and leave it to God.

And you, prince of the heavenly hosts, drive Satan and the other evil spirits, who go about the world for the ruin of souls, back into hell by the divine power. Amen.
- Proper Exorcism or Exorcisms
o To be distinguished:
a solemn exorcism (official, in the name of the Church, in surplice and stole) can only be done by a priest, with jurisdiction.
private exorcism can be done by anyone who is in the right disposition:
normally that is either a good priest or a holy layman (for example Saint Hildegard of Bingen drove out demons).
the great exorcism stands in the rituale and drives the devil out of the physical body of a person of good will who is possessed. The possession must be established by a competent person (normally the official exorcist, who establishes the three signs that are named in the rituale). Many cases of problems are indeed purely pathological.
a small exorcism drives the devil out of the mystical body. To be applied in vexation, infestation, obsession, “fixed idea”, some scruples in short all manifest presence of malicious spirits,

Prayer to the Holy Archangel Michael.
Most glorious Prince of the heavenly hosts, Holy Archangel Michael, defend us in the battle which we have to fight against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places (Eph. VI-12).
Come to the aid of men, whom God created free from all error, “made to the image of His substance,” (Wisd. II-23) and redeemed “at so great a price” from the tyranny exercised by the devil (I Cor. VI-20).
You Holy Archangel Michael and the whole heavenly army of the blessed Angels, fight again the battle of the Lord, as of old you fought against Lucifer, the proud one and against his apostate angels. “But they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, who seduceth the whole world; and he was cast unto the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.”
And now this ancient enemy, “a murderer from the beginning” (Jn. VIII-44), has risen up powerfully, “disguised as an angel of light” (II Cor. XI-14), accompanied by a horde of evil spirits, wandering over the earth in all directions, and mixing themselves everywhere; with the aim of making the name of God and of His Christ disappear, and of causing the souls that were to be crowned with eternal glory to perish and to cast them into eternal damnation.
The evil dragon injects, into mentally corrupted men with a corrupt heart, a stream of
basenesses: the virus of his evil, the spirit of lying, disobedience and sacrilege, the
deadly poison of vice, lust and generalized iniquity.
The Church, the spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, is saturated with bitterness and has drunk abundantly of poison by very cunning enemies; they have laid their hands on all that she desires as holy. There, where the seat of Peter was established, and the Chair of Truth, there they have set up the throne of their abomination in disobedience; so that when the shepherd was struck, the flock could be scattered.
O Holy Michael, invincible leader, come then among the people of God who are in the grip of the spirit of injustice, give it the victory and make it triumph.
The Holy Church venerates you as her Guardian and her Protector; she glorifies you as her Defender against all evil powers, on earth and in hell; the Lord has entrusted to you to lead the redeemed souls to the place of the highest blessedness.
Pray the God of Peace that He may crush Satan under our feet, so that he may no longer hold men captive, nor harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the presence of the Most High, that “the mercy of the Lord may quickly come down upon us” (Ps. LXXVIII), and that you may seize the dragon, the ancient serpent who is the devil or Satan, and that, bound in the abyss, he may no longer seduce the nations” (Apoc. XX,3).
Relying on your protection, by the holy authority of our mother the Holy Church, it is with full confidence that we, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and God, drive back the pollutions of diabolical cunning.

God and Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we invoke Thy Holy Name; and, beseeching we now ask Thee for Thy kindness, through the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin, the Mother of God, of the Holy Archangel Michael, of Saint Joseph, spouse of the Virgin Mary, of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and of all the Saints, deign to help us against Satan and against all other evil spirits, who wander about the world to harm the human race and to cast the souls into the abyss. Amen.
Exorcism
We drive you out, whoever you may be, evil spirit, satanic power, horde of the hellish enemy, diabolical legion, the whole assembly and diabolical sect, in the name of the “Virtue” (Luke VIII.46) of Jesus Christ + Our Lord, be rooted out and driven away by the Church of God, from the souls (Matt. XII,43) created to the image of God and redeemed by the precious Blood of the Divine Lamb +.
Henceforth, dare no more, malignant serpent, to deceive the human race, to persecute the Church of God, to shake and to “sift as wheat” (Luke XXII, 31) the elect of God +.
He commands you, the Most High God + to whom, in your great pride, you still pretend to be equal, He who wills that “all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth” (I Tim. II, 4). He commands you, God the Father +, He commands you, God the Son +, He commands you, God the Holy Ghost +, He commands you Christ in majesty, eternal Word of God made flesh +, who for the salvation of our race, that was lost by your envy, “humbled Himself and became obedient unto death” (Phil. II), who has built His Church upon the “Rock” (Matt. VII, 24), and has promised that “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. XVI, 18), for “He will remain with Her until the end of time” (Matt. XXVIII, 20).
He commands you, the sign of the Holy Cross +, and the virtue connected with all the mysteries of the Christian faith +. She commands you, the most Holy Mother of God, the Virgin Mary + who, from the first moment of her Immaculate Conception, by her humility, has crushed your so proud head. It commands you, the faith of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and the other Apostles +. It commands you, the blood of the martyrs and the pious intercession of all the Saints +. Come then, cursed dragon and all the devilish legions, we adjure you by the Living God +, by the True God +, by the Holy God +, by that God who so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him may not perish, but may have eternal life (John III, 15). Cease to deceive human creatures and to administer to them the poison of the eternal curse. Cease to harm the Church and to hinder her liberty.
Back Satan, inventor and master of all deceit, enemy of the salvation of men. Make place for Christ in whom you have found none of your works. Make place for the Church, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic, which Christ has acquired with the price of His Blood. Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, tremble and flee at the invocation of the Holy and fearful Name of that Jesus who makes hell tremble, to whom are subject the Powers of Heaven, the Powers and the Dominions, whom the Cherubim and the Seraphim praise without end, saying: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord, the God of the Heavenly Hosts.

I ask You, Holy Guardian Angels, Holy Archangel Michael, all Holy Angels and Archangels, my Patron Saint and all Saints in Heaven (one can mention the name of the Saint of the day and the Saints for whom we have a special devotion), take the place of the driven out devils and stopped satanists here on earth and make that the deep peace of Christ may reign among men, a wide charity, a solid religiosity, and do everything that the Kingdom of the Father may come on earth. If the satanist keeps “working” again and again on his victim, then to protect oneself against continually returning evil influences, pray daily:
Holy Archangel Michael build us a wall (for protection) against the devils and the satanists
Holy Archangel Gabriel, cover us with an armour (for protection) against the poisonous influences of the world
Holy Archangel Raphael, cover us with a garment (for protection) against the concupiscence and the temptations of the flesh

- Make Reparation to God
God has been heavily offended by the mortal sin of magic, mortal sin against the first and most important commandment. One must make reparation by Holy Masses, and/or prayers, offering sacrifices, etc. for example the prayers after the blessing of the Benediction.
“My Lord and my God, I offer You in Jesus’ Name and through the intercession of Our Lady Mary, all the merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Holy Church, and of my whole life to make reparation for all the sins committed against You, in particular the sins that have relation to these diabolical influences.
